When Elysian K-8 in Billings expanded several years ago, dynamic design to enhance student education was a priority. Enter the garage door!
Alpha Overhead Door installed eleven Amarr 3552 Heavy-Duty Aluminum Full View sectional doors in the interior classroom spaces. These doors maximize the use of natural light and offer increased flexibility within new and existing classrooms. When doors are opened, the shared spaces provide teachers and students the opportunity to engage in collaborative instruction and learning between classrooms and hallways. Students can even hang projects on the door and write on them with dry-erase markers!
Alpha’s General Manager, Matt Weber, oversaw the project at Elysian. “The Amarr full view doors represent our first experience in the school interior environment,” Weber shared. “They play not only an important daily functional role but also provide a really cool industrial look.” Our techs only ran into a couple design challenges along the way, which included extra effort on headroom setup and modifying the cable run exposure to eliminate possible safety issues.

After installation, Weber spent time offering basic safety and operation instruction to the teachers, as well as how to operate a door with students around. All doors are also padlocked to prevent students from opening and closing.
We are increasingly seeing the use of garage doors in interior environments in both businesses and homes, creating an exciting new wave of design. Using garage doors in an educational environment exemplifies how interior garage doors enhance both the design and functionality of interior spaces.
